2025 Preliminary Voters List Released and Constitutional
The British Virgin Islands have taken significant steps towards both electoral and constitutional transparency with the release of the 2025 Preliminary Voters List for public review and the upcoming debate on the Constitutional Review Commission Report. These actions underscore the Territory's commitment to democratic processes and self-determination.
In a move to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in the British Virgin Islands, the Office of the Supervisor of Elections announced the release of the 2025 Preliminary Voters List on September 5, 2025. This list, showcasing a total of 16,204 registered voters across the nine electoral districts, is now open for public inspection in accordance with section 18(6) of the Elections Act, 1994.
Carlene Herbert, highlighted the importance of this review process in ensuring the accuracy and transparency of the electoral roll. The list is accessible across 51 locations Territory-wide, including supermarkets, clinics, and government buildings, with the public encouraged to submit any objections or claims by September 25th at the Office located on Main Street, Tortola.
In tandem with these electoral preparations, Premier of the Virgin Islands, Honourable Dr. Wheatley, has urged residents and nationals in the diaspora to engage with the 2022-2023 Constitutional Review Commission Report. This report, a culmination of extensive consultations across the Territory, addresses critical governance aspects such as term limits for the Premier, direct election of the Premier, and fixed dates for elections, among others.
Officially handed to Governor John Rankin CMG and Premier Wheatley on November 27, 2023, the report signifies a pivotal step towards negotiating a new Constitution in line with the Territory's aspirations towards self-determination. The Premier emphasized the report's importance ahead of its debate in the House of Assembly on September 18, 2025, inviting the public to follow the proceedings via various broadcasting platforms.
