284 Excellence Film Festival Extends Deadline for BVI Filmmakers BVI filmmakers and local creatives now have additional time to get their work on the big screen, with the submission deadline for the National/Local category of the 2026 284 Excellence Film Festival extended to October 3.
The British Virgin Islands Film Commission says the extension is aimed at giving local filmmakers more time to complete and submit projects produced from January 2024 onward, while encouraging greater representation of Virgin Islands stories and creative voices at the second edition of the festival.
BVI Film Commissioner Natalie Hodge is encouraging both established and emerging filmmakers to take advantage of the additional time, saying the Territory has "tremendous creative potential." The National category also features the "Say Less" Student Smartphone Film Competition, giving young filmmakers ages 9 to 14 and 15 to 19 an opportunity to enter the filmmaking space by producing short films entirely on smartphones or tablets.
The 284 Excellence Film Festival returns from October 29 to November 1, following its inaugural staging in 2025. That first edition attracted 30 film submissions from 16 locations across its International, Regional and National categories and brought together filmmakers, industry professionals, students and audiences from the BVI, the wider Caribbean and the international film community.
This year's festival will again feature International, Regional and National categories, with screenings and opportunities for filmmakers to engage with established industry professionals. The festival's primary focus is Caribbean Folklore & Fables, with filmmakers encouraged to explore stories rooted in folklore, ancestral traditions, cultural memory and characters and narratives passed down through generations.
Films covering other themes and genres are also welcome. For the Film Commission, the festival is intended to be more than a series of screenings. It is part of a wider effort to help local filmmakers develop their craft, gain exposure and connect Virgin Islands stories with the regional and international film industry.
The National/Local submission deadline is October 3, 2026. Further details on the festival programme, screenings, special guests, participating filmmakers and other activities are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
