93 Billfish Released in Scrub Island Tournament
The 2026 Scrub Island Billfish Series concluded with 93 billfish releases and more than $500,000 awarded in prize money across two competitive legs. International fishing teams tackled the legendary North Drop off the Virgin Islands, with Swish and Fresh Air taking top honours in their respective divisions.
Anglers from around the world converged on the British Virgin Islands for the 2026 Scrub Island Billfish Series, recording a combined total of 93 billfish releases and competing for more than $500,000 in cash payouts. Produced by The Marlin Group and hosted at Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina, this year's tournament saw continued growth with 16 teams competing in Leg I and 14 teams participating in Leg II.
Across both legs, crews logged 89 blue marlin, two white marlin, and two sailfish at the world-famous North Drop, one of the premier sportfishing destinations in the Caribbean. During Leg I, held from August 24 to August 28, the 78-foot Rybovich Swish, led by Captain Michael Mattson, took first place with 3,600 points to earn $90,125.
Big Ben, a 78-foot F&S, secured second place with 3,000 points, while Captain Shay Danzig and the 66-foot Spencer Marlin Darlin matched the point total to take third on time. Joe West of Swish claimed the Top Angler title for the opening leg, while Miss Ma’am topped the final-day shootout to take home $47,316.66.
Leg II, which ran from August 28 to September 1, concluded with a weather-shortened schedule and a new champion. Captain Bryan Ramos and the crew aboard the 54-foot Hatteras Fresh Air accumulated 3,000 points to claim victory and the leg's largest payout of $127,433.34. Crew member Ricardo Quinones also earned Top Angler honours.
Swish remained competitive, taking second place with 2,500 points and $110,516.66 in prize money, while Big Ben finished third with 2,000 points. Sandra Grisham-Clothier, General Manager of Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, noted that the event continues to showcase the territory's elite marine offerings. "The continued growth of the Scrub Island Billfish Series speaks to what makes this event so special – world-class fishing paired with the relaxed, private-island experience our guests enjoy once they return to the dock," Grisham-Clothier said. "We're proud to welcome these talented teams back to the BVI each year and to provide a home base that puts them close to the legendary North Drop while giving anglers, families and friends a memorable resort experience throughout the week." The series was supported by several partners, including the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board and international marine sponsors.
Organizers confirmed that official dates for the 2027 Scrub Island Billfish Series will be announced at a later date.
