Anegada Hosts Critical Sister Islands Coordination Meeting
The Sister Islands Coordination Committee (SICC), chaired by the Deputy Governor, convened on Anegada to address key concerns and implement solutions for the Sister Islands. Discussions focused on tackling the Sargassum Seaweed influx, infrastructural improvements, government office updates, and support for public officers among other concerns.
In a significant step towards addressing the unique challenges faced by the Sister Islands, the Sister Islands Coordination Committee (SICC) held its quarterly meeting on Anegada on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Chaired by the Deputy Governor, the SICC serves as a crucial platform for the discussion, management, and implementation of solutions across these islands, ensuring they receive the necessary attention and support akin to Tortola.
The meeting saw presentations from the Sister Islands Programme Coordinator, Mrs. Monel Nickie, and District Officers on a variety of issues, drawing from an existing database and feedback from the community. High-level representatives from across governmental departments, including the Premier’s Office, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Health and Social Development, were in attendance, underscoring the meeting's comprehensive approach to problem-solving.
Key discussion points included combating the recent surge of Sargassum Seaweed affecting the islands, infrastructural upgrades, and enhancing government services to better support public officers and the communities they serve. The meeting highlighted the government’s dedication to ensuring the Sister Islands do not lag behind in development and attention.
Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sharleen DaBreo-Lettsome, emphasized the importance of such meetings, stating, “The Sister Islands and the issues they face are just as important as what we deal with on Tortola.” She reassured attendees of the senior managers' commitment to serving all islands within the Virgin Islands.
In addition to discussions, senior managers conducted site visits to more than five locations on Anegada, including the new Solar Farm at BVI Electricity Corporation and the Auguste George International Airport. These visits provided them with a firsthand understanding of local concerns and the opportunity to engage directly with residents.
Shirley Vanterpool, expressed her appreciation for the choice of Anegada as the meeting’s location, highlighting the benefit of having senior managers on the ground to witness and address local issues directly. The SICC’s meeting on Anegada marks a proactive step towards addressing the pressing needs of the Sister Islands, ensuring they remain a priority in the territory’s development agenda.
The collaborative effort across various government ministries and departments showcases a unified approach to solving the complex challenges faced by these islands, promising a more inclusive and sustainable future for all residents of the Virgin Islands.
