Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate Ashma McDougall has emerged victorious in the Roseau North by-election, securing a decisive win in her first bid for parliamentary office. The economist and political newcomer successfully connected with constituents across the district, establishing herself as a formidable presence in Dominica's political landscape.
Preliminary figures released by the Electoral Office show that McDougall claimed 1,506 votes, finishing 523 votes ahead of her closest challenger, Daniel Andrew Lugay of the United Workers Party (UWP), who received 983 ballots. Independent candidate Sherman "Donty" Boston finished in third place with 50 votes.
According to the official data, a total of 2,595 ballots were cast from an eligible list of 7,489 registered electors across the polling districts. Election officials reported that 15 ballots were recorded as spoilt and 41 were rejected during the tallying process. The Electoral Office maintained transparency throughout the exercise by broadcasting live preliminary updates from polling stations across the constituency.
During her campaign, McDougall placed strong emphasis on grassroots community development and municipal improvements. Her stated priorities for Roseau North include rehabilitating community footpaths and access roads, addressing critical drainage and sanitation concerns, and strengthening local recreational and public facilities.
