The closure of Bank of Asia (BVI) Limited has prompted concerns over a $5 million deposit made by the Virgin Islands government. Governor Pruce confirmed the matter is under the Auditor General's review, following requests for an investigation into the transaction.

The Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation (VIDIC), in coordination with the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (FSC), executed the closure of Bank of Asia (BVI) Limited on May 28, 2025. This decisive action followed concerns over the bank's operations and financial stability.

In the wake of the closure, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley disclosed that the government held a significant deposit in the now-defunct institution. As of April 30, 2025, the government's account balance stood at five million, thirty-five thousand, nine hundred and forty-seven dollars ($5,035,947), a revelation that has sparked widespread concern among taxpayers and officials alike.

In response to these concerns, Premier Wheatley announced his intent to commission an internal audit to scrutinize this particular transaction thoroughly. This move aims to offer reassurance to the public and guarantee transparency regarding the government's financial decisions. However, the issue has attracted further scrutiny from the opposition.

Walwyn, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, formally requested Governor Pruce to initiate a separate investigation into the matter, highlighting the need for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the deposit. During a press conference held on August 26, 2025, Governor Pruce addressed the ongoing controversy.

He confirmed that the examination of the government's deposit in the Bank of Asia is currently under the purview of the Auditor General. Governor Pruce emphasized the autonomy of the Auditor General's office in conducting investigations and finalizing reports, underscoring the importance of allowing the process to unfold without interference.

Despite the growing interest in the situation, Governor Pruce refrained from commenting further, stressing that the matter is now entirely in the hands of the Auditor General. As the investigation progresses, BVI residents and officials eagerly await the findings, which will likely have significant implications for the government's financial management practices and the oversight of banking operations within the territory.

This situation underscores the critical role of regulatory bodies and audit functions in maintaining the integrity of financial institutions and public funds in the British Virgin Islands.
