Barbados Unveils Digital Marketplace for Carifesta Artisans
In a significant move to digitize and globalize the Caribbean's creative economy, Barbados announces the launch of an e-Marketplace for artisans of CARIFESTA, with the government covering initial onboarding costs. This initiative aims to turn the cultural festival's exposure into a sustainable economic opportunity, allowing regional craftspeople, designers, and cultural vendors to reach global markets.
In an innovative step towards enhancing the Caribbean's creative industries, the Government of Barbados has announced the creation of an electronic marketplace specifically designed for artisans who participated in the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA). During the closing ceremony at the Richard Stoute Amphitheatre, Prime Minister Mia Mottley revealed plans for this digital platform, which aims to extend the reach of Caribbean creativity from regional visibility to global markets.
Prime Minister Mottley emphasized the importance of leveraging the festival's exposure for long-term economic gain, stating, 'This is about ensuring that our work and our products are not a thing of the past.' Recognizing the potential of the 'orange economy' and the creative industries, the initiative seeks to provide a substantial boost for small entrepreneurs by allowing them to showcase and sell their products worldwide at no initial cost.
The Barbadian government will fund the first year of onboarding costs for vendors, covering setup fees and thus facilitating their entry into the digital market. The marketplace is set to feature a wide array of goods, including handmade jewellery, indigenous textiles, Caribbean fashion, and culinary products that have traditionally captivated audiences during CARIFESTA.
With the festive season approaching, Mottley urged potential buyers to support the platform, highlighting the exceptional quality of workmanship displayed by the vendors. This move is in response to the longstanding advocacy from cultural economists for CARIFESTA to evolve beyond being merely a cultural showcase, towards becoming a driver of sustainable economic development.
By providing digital access to the global market, the initiative aims to strengthen the creative economy across the Caribbean, offering micro to small entrepreneurs their first chance to engage with international customers and regional diasporas year-round, beyond seasonal events.
The planned e-Marketplace, anticipated to launch before the holiday season, represents a legacy of CARIFESTA XV. It is part of a broader strategy to bolster economic resilience in the Caribbean while showcasing its rich cultural identity. As the region looks forward to the platform's introduction in the coming months, the creative community is poised to witness a significant transformation in how Caribbean artistry and craftsmanship are shared and celebrated globally, promising new opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange for BVI residents and beyond.
