Biras Marina And Resort Undergoes Major Revitalisation
Biras Marina & Resort in Virgin Gorda is entering a new chapter of development led by the Houwer family, featuring expanded superyacht facilities, new culinary concepts, and luxury private residences. The secluded 140-acre destination in the North Sound is executing a 10-year master plan designed to elevate maritime hospitality while preserving its historic charm.
Nestled across 140 secluded acres in Virgin Gorda's North Sound, the historic property formerly known as Biras Creek is undergoing a significant transformation under the leadership of Guillermo and Patrick Houwer. Building upon the legacy established by their father, Dutch entrepreneur Bert Houwer, who acquired the sanctuary in 1996, the brothers are revitalising Biras Marina & Resort with upgraded infrastructure, curated hospitality offerings, and exclusive real estate developments.
A major focus of the revitalisation is the newly enhanced marina, specifically engineered to accommodate superyachts measuring 150 feet and above with draughts of up to 20 feet. In addition to deep-water berths, the marina provides 20 mooring buoys catering to the wider yachting community navigating the North Sound.
To improve connectivity for visitors and crew, the resort operates a complimentary hourly boat shuttle connecting the property with the Gun Creek transport hub on mainland Virgin Gorda. Culinary innovation is central to the property's renewed identity. The resort has introduced Ikigai, a waterfront Japanese omakase concept launched in 2024 that combines traditional culinary methods with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Guests can also visit The Mangrove, an open-air Mediterranean restaurant featuring live music and sunset dining, as well as Cafecito, an all-day espresso bar and artisanal bakery. Future amenities include a provisioning store stocked with curated European goods to support visiting vessels and local residents.
Expanding beyond traditional hospitality, Biras recently launched Chapter One of its private residential offerings, featuring a collection of nine luxury villas overlooking the sound. The phase sold out completely, with construction scheduled for completion by mid-2028. The completed residences will integrate into the resort's rental programme, providing accommodations for international travellers seeking privacy and direct marine access.
The ongoing enhancements represent the initial phase of a comprehensive 10-year master development plan. Future additions will incorporate a luxury retail boutique, rooftop lounge, dedicated event spaces, wellness amenities, and bespoke yacht services, ensuring Biras remains a premier maritime destination while safeguarding the natural tranquillity that has defined the North Sound for generations.
