In a significant move to support the British Virgin Islands' economic growth, 23 local entrepreneurs received grants at the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Grant Distribution Ceremony. The grants aim to foster diversity and resilience within the Territory's business community, with a notable increase in financial support from $100,000 to $300,000.
On Friday, August 29, 2025, the British Virgin Islands took a major step in bolstering its economy and supporting local entrepreneurs through the second Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Grant Distribution Ceremony. Held at the BVI International Arbitration Centre, the event awarded grants to 23 entrepreneurs, underscoring the Territory's commitment to nurturing a diverse and resilient business ecosystem.
The ceremony, which brought together grant recipients, government officials, and business stakeholders, highlighted the increased financial backing for this year's grant program - from $100,000 to $300,000. This boost in support was made possible by the Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon Natalio D.
Wheatley (R7), reflecting a strong governmental commitment to economic development and diversification. Smith, OBE (AL), Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development, emphasized the critical role of MSMEs in the Territory's economic framework. She pointed out the significant strides the country has made in becoming more self-reliant and resilient, especially in sectors like agriculture, which is crucial for food security and economic stability. "Eight years ago, we faced great challenges as a country, but today we are resilient and supporting ourselves," Smith remarked, highlighting the success and potential of the grant program.
The grants were awarded to a diverse group of entrepreneurs, with a strong representation from the agricultural sector, reflecting the government's vision of a diversified economy and the importance of local production and sustainability. Each of the 19 recipients recognized at the ceremony was selected for their potential to contribute meaningfully to the Territory's economy.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development, and Digital Transformation, in collaboration with the Department of Trade, is encouraging more entrepreneurs and small business owners to apply for the MSME Grant Programme. This initiative is not only about providing financial support but also about building resilience and creating growth opportunities across various sectors.
