BVI Butler Honoured in International Feature
BVI native Lucien Stoutt has been profiled in an international feature titled “The Keeper of Excellence,” highlighting his 36-year career as butler to the Lewis family of East Hampton. The piece celebrates his dedication, faith and service and reconnects his work abroad with a family legacy of leadership in the Virgin Islands.
The British Virgin Islands is celebrating one of its own after Lucien Stoutt was profiled in an international feature, “The Keeper of Excellence: Mr. Lucien Stoutt and the Quiet Power of Devotion,” written by Carmen Evelyn G. Nuyda on Substack and picked up locally by Jahphix Television.
Stoutt’s 36-year career serving the Lewis family of East Hampton, New York — first to the late Reginald F. Lewis, the entrepreneur widely recognised as the first African American to build a billion-dollar global business, and continuing in loyal service to Mrs. Loida Nicolas Lewis, a noted philanthropist and business leader.
Stoutt as “the quiet guardian of a legacy,” noting his faith, precision and grace in one of America’s most respected households. Stoutt’s story carries special significance. He is the nephew of the late Honourable H. Lavity Stoutt, the Territory’s first Chief Minister and namesake of H.
That family connection places Lucien within a long tradition of public service and community leadership that many here will recognise and respect. Stoutt said he was humbled to represent the Territory abroad. “I feel honored to uphold my family’s name and now serve as a beacon for the future generation to come as a Native Virgin Islander,” he told the outlet.
He splits his time between East Hampton and Ballast Bay, but remains closely connected to home: he returned to the Territory in April 2025 to celebrate his mother Esmie Estene Stoutt’s 100th birthday and again in July 2025 for his sister Shirleen’s retirement from the Social Security Board.
The Stoutt family remains active across the Territory in business, public service and community life, with siblings involved in hospitality, law, the arts and government. Among them are Prince Alford Stoutt of Stoutt Lookout Bar, Berenice Stoutt of Best Kakes and Pastries, Janice Stoutt (Attorney-at-Law), MacNeil Stoutt of The Moorings BVI and Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office.
Stoutt is also uncle to Deputy Governor David Archer Jr. Niece Amethyst Clyne Straker shared the international piece with pride and reflected on her uncle’s example: “True leadership should always begin in a service role. He often says, ‘To serve well is to serve God.’” The profile has generated local pride in a life of quiet, steadfast service that links the BVI to a broader international story.
