BVI Delegation Begins UK Constitutional Talks
A high-level Virgin Islands delegation is currently in London for the second round of constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom. Led by Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley, the cross-party team is working to modernise the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007. The talks at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office aim to strengthen local governance and democratic institutions.
A high-level, bipartisan delegation from the Virgin Islands has convened in London for the second round of formal constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom Government. The discussions, held at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), focus on modernising the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 to reflect the territory's contemporary political, social, and economic realities.
Wheatley is leading the territory's negotiating team, presenting a unified front alongside parliamentary colleagues from both sides of the aisle. The political delegation includes Deputy Premier Honourable Julian Fraser, Leader of the Opposition Honourable Marlon A. Skelton, alongside Cabinet Ministers Honourable Sharie de Castro and Honourable Kye Rymer.
The delegation is supported by a comprehensive legal and technical advisory team. Joining the talks are Attorney General Honourable Dawn Smith, Honourable Mr. Justice Gerard Farara, KC, renowned constitutional scholar Sir Jeffrey Jowell, KC, Mrs. This experienced advisory panel is assisting the leaders in negotiating complex legal frameworks and governance structures.
Constitutional modernisation has remained a key national priority following extensive public consultations and the final report of the Constitutional Review Commission. The negotiations address critical areas of governance, including the balance of responsibilities between the United Kingdom and the local government, greater decision-making autonomy for elected representatives, and enhanced accountability mechanisms.
