BVI Drivers Dominate Grenada Drag Race
Team BVI made a historic mark at the King Ocean International Grenada Drags, securing both first and second place in the competitive 13 Second Class. Represented by Speed Shop VI and Hurricane Racing Crew, the contingent outperformed competitors from across the wider Caribbean and the United States.
Motorsports competitors representing the British Virgin Islands achieved a historic victory after claiming the top two spots in the 13 Second Class at the King Ocean International Grenada Drags. The major regional event, hosted by the Grenada Motor Club at the Pearls International Speedway in St.
Andrew, Grenada, featured approximately 250 registered vehicles and racing teams from across the Eastern Caribbean, the wider region, and the United States, including competitors from Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname, and Barbados. Team BVI, represented by members of Speed Shop VI and the Hurricane Racing Crew, delivered an exceptional showing against stiff international competition.
Three vehicles representing the Territory advanced to the semi-finals, culminating in a dominant performance in the 13 Second Class, which featured over 16 registered vehicles. In the final standings for the category, the Virgin Islands car owned by Esau Rohan Andrews, widely known as "Black Lion," and driven by Ian Galbreath captured first place.
Securing second place was a Dodge Hellcat owned by Terry Smith and driven by Kareem Douglas. Turnbull noted that the achievement marks the Territory's first international first-place trophy at a motorsport event of this scale. He highlighted the importance of motorsports and cultural tourism, noting that the event fostered valuable regional connections and opportunities for sports diplomacy across the Caribbean.
The successful expedition was supported by several corporate and governmental partners. Shipping company King Ocean transported the racing vehicles to Grenada free of charge. Additional support was provided by Fly BVI, the BVI Ports Authority, and the Ministry of Communications and Works, headed by Minister Hon.
In a notable personal milestone, the team's charter flight was operated by Fly BVI pilot Jeremy Charles, who was born in Grenada and raised on Virgin Gorda, marking his first return to his birthplace in fifteen years.
