BVI Emerges as Digital Finance Leader
New research from BVI Finance, launched during Fintech on the Seas, shows the British Virgin Islands is now a leading global hub for tokenised finance and digital assets. Key findings include $1.5 billion of US tokenised treasuries routed through BVI structures and more than 28,000 stablecoin holders, underscoring the territory’s growing role in real-world asset tokenisation.
New research published by BVI Finance and launched during the ongoing 2026 Fintech on the Seas conference reveals the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has become a major global centre for digital assets and tokenised finance. The report, titled "Destination Digital: An On-Chain Future," notes that as of June 1, 2026 the distributed value of US tokenised treasuries in the BVI reached $1.5 billion — meaning roughly one in every ten dollars of tokenised US treasuries globally is represented through BVI structures.
The territory also hosts the highest number of tokenised securities of any jurisdiction with 305 listings, and more than 28,000 stablecoin asset holders. Current weekly transfer volumes are reported at $323.5 million, putting annualised on-chain stablecoin activity on track to exceed $16.8 billion.
According to BVI Finance, these figures position the BVI at the centre of a rapidly expanding market for tokenised real-world assets (RWAs). Globally, the on-chain RWA market reached $334 billion in June 2026 including stablecoins, and $31.6 billion when stablecoins are excluded, with forecasts suggesting the market could exceed $400 billion by 2030.
BVI Finance attributes the territory’s emergence to deliberate regulatory innovation and a supportive business environment. The research highlights the BVI’s tax-neutral corporate framework, the bespoke VASP Act 2022, court-recognised legal status for digital assets, and an established professional services ecosystem as key structural advantages that attract institutional-grade tokenised structures.
The calibre of firms choosing the BVI reinforces the findings: Tether Holdings, Bitfinex, Binance, Kraken and, most recently, Bitstamp by Robinhood are among the businesses with corporate ties to the territory. "The digitisation of real-world assets is reshaping how capital is owned, transferred, and settled," BVI Finance CEO Elise Donovan said in presenting the research. "This transition is happening now, and at scale.
Recent regulatory developments in the United States and internationally are giving institutional capital the certainty it needs to move in." For residents, the growth of tokenised finance presents potential upside — increased demand for local legal, accounting and trust services, and opportunities for high-skilled jobs — while also underscoring the need for robust oversight, continued compliance with AML/CFT standards, and ongoing regulatory engagement to manage risks.
As global finance moves on-chain, BVI officials and service providers will play a central role in shaping how that future unfolds locally and internationally.
