Residents across the British Virgin Islands are being urged to prepare for unsettled weather and heightened flash flood risks this weekend as an area of disturbed weather associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly approaches the region. The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued a Flash Flood Statement on Friday, August 28, warning that the system is expected to impact the territory primarily on Sunday.
According to forecaster Lorne Salmon, the disturbed weather system will first spread across the Leeward Islands on Saturday night before advancing toward the Virgin Islands by Sunday morning. Total rainfall accumulations across the territory are projected to reach between one and three inches.
Meteorologists have warned that locally higher amounts could fall within very short intervals, significantly escalating the potential for sudden, intense flash flooding. The anticipated downpours pose a severe risk to low-lying communities, small streams, creeks, and guts, as well as areas prone to poor drainage.
Forecasters and disaster officials cautioned that intense downpours could lead to rapid runoff, quickly submerging local roadways and creating hazardous travel conditions across the territory. Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and to avoid driving through flooded roads or moving water.
In light of the weather advisory, disaster management officials and meteorological services are calling on residents to take proactive preparedness measures ahead of the system's arrival. Property owners are encouraged to inspect and clear accumulated debris from outdoor storm drains, gutters, and waterways to allow proper drainage.
Residents are also urged to review their household flash flood safety plans and be prepared to move to higher ground if flood conditions worsen or if formal warnings are issued. Meteorological authorities confirmed they will continue to track the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly as the system nears the territory.
