BVI Film Festival Extends Submission Deadline
The British Virgin Islands Film Commission has extended the submission deadline for local filmmakers entering the second edition of the 284 Excellence Film Festival. Scheduled for late October, the festival encourages Territory creators to submit original work under the theme of Caribbean Folklore and Fables. The event also features a dedicated student competition designed to inspire young Virgin Islands storytellers.
The British Virgin Islands Film Commission has extended the submission deadline for local filmmakers participating in the upcoming second edition of the 284 Excellence Film Festival. The new deadline of October 3 gives Territory creators additional time to complete and submit work produced from January 2024 onward, ensuring strong representation of Virgin Islands voices on screen.
The festival is scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 1, offering screenings, industry engagements, and networking opportunities for established and emerging filmmakers. The event returns following an inaugural edition in 2025 that brought together 30 film submissions from 16 locations across National, Regional, and International categories.
BVI Film Commissioner Natalie Hodge emphasized the importance of local participation, noting that the extension offers creators the space to finalize ongoing projects or produce new content. Hodge explained that the festival is designed to build a creative ecosystem where Virgin Islands filmmakers can develop their craft, present their work to diverse audiences, and connect with regional and international film professionals.
This year’s festival places a special spotlight on Caribbean Folklore and Fables, inviting filmmakers to delve into ancestral traditions, oral histories, and cultural memory. While this thematic focus is highlighted, the festival remains open to submissions spanning all styles, themes, and narrative genres.
In addition to the general National category, the festival features the 'Say Less' Student Smartphone Film Competition. Aimed at youth aged 9 to 14 and 15 to 19, the initiative provides an accessible entry point into filmmaking by challenging young residents to produce short films entirely on smartphones or tablets.
The 284 Excellence Film Festival represents a key initiative by the BVI Film Commission to nurture domestic talent and position the Territory as an emerging hub for television and film production.
