BVI Government Boosts Local Economy with Second
The Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs recently celebrated the second Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Grant Distribution Ceremony, awarding significant financial grants to a diverse group of entrepreneurs, particularly in the agriculture sector. This initiative, reflecting the government's commitment to economic diversification, aims to bolster the local business ecosystem and promote long-term economic growth.
In a significant push towards nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within the British Virgin Islands, the Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs hosted its second Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Grant Distribution Ceremony on August 29, 2025. This year's ceremony, held at the prestigious BVI International Arbitration Centre, marked a notable increase in the government's financial commitment to local entrepreneurs, with grants totaling $300,000, up from $100,000 in previous years.
The event showcased the government’s intensified efforts to support small businesses, particularly those in the agricultural sector, reflecting a broader vision for economic diversification and self-reliance. Lincoln Bobb, Deputy Director of the Department of Trade, highlighted the ceremony as not just a grant distribution event but as the commencement of a valuable collaboration between the government and the private sector aimed at building a more robust BVI economy.
Sandy Boyce, a beneficiary from a previous year, who shared how the grant had significantly enabled her to expand her Speech Therapy Services. Her story served as an inspiration for the new recipients, emphasizing the impact of these grants on individual businesses and the community at large.
Honourable Lorna Smith, OBE, Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development, reiterated the crucial role of MSMEs in the territory's economic landscape. She underscored the government's increased investment in the program as evidence of their commitment to fostering a diversified and resilient economy, with an emphasis on enhancing food security through agricultural initiatives.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of cheques to the new cohort of grant recipients, each recognized for their potential to contribute significantly to the Territory's economy. The Department of Trade, in collaboration with the Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation, encouraged more entrepreneurs to apply for the MSME Grant Programme, which remains open to various sectors.
