BVI Hosts Diaspora Gathering in London
The Government of the Virgin Islands hosted its annual Diaspora Gathering at BVI House in London as part of preparations for the 2025 Joint Ministerial Council. Premier Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley led discussions with Virgin Islanders in the UK on education, economic opportunity, public service and ways the diaspora can support the Territory’s development.
The Government of the Virgin Islands successfully hosted its annual Diaspora Gathering at BVI House in London as part of the Virgin Islands delegation’s preparations for the 2025 Joint Ministerial Council (JMC). The event convened students, professionals and residents from the UK for an evening of dialogue aimed at strengthening ties between the diaspora and the Territory.
Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Dr. Wheatley, led the engagement alongside senior government officials. Attendees were invited to share priorities and perspectives on national development, covering topics from educational support and career pathways to public service, national identity and remote collaboration across technology, public policy, health and culture. “The people abroad are an essential part of the Virgin Islands' story.
Your insights, skills, and experiences continue to enrich our Territory,” Premier Wheatley told the audience, emphasising the government’s commitment to creating pathways for meaningful diaspora contribution. Participants pressed for stronger academic networks, clearer routes for returning graduates, and expanded opportunities for remote work and policy collaboration.
The gathering also served as a preparatory platform for the JMC. Premier Wheatley, who serves as President of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), will lead the Virgin Islands delegation in unified discussions with other Overseas Territories and UK ministers.
Key issues expected to feature at the JMC include climate resilience, sustainable development, governance and economic stability—areas where UKOTA has been coordinating joint positions and advocacy. Under Premier Wheatley’s stewardship, UKOTA has sought to amplify the collective voice of the Overseas Territories on matters such as environmental management, disaster preparedness, trade and regional security.
At the London event, Wheatley said that cohesion among Territories strengthens their influence and improves prospects for practical outcomes at ministerial level. For residents of the BVI, the annual diaspora engagement underscores an ongoing government effort to harness overseas skills, investment and advocacy for local development.
The perspectives gathered in London will inform the Virgin Islands delegation’s contributions at the JMC and help shape domestic policy initiatives. The Government of the Virgin Islands thanked the diaspora community for their engagement and said further updates on the Territory’s participation at the Joint Ministerial Council will be shared through the Premier’s Office.
