BVI Hosts Regional Tech and Tourism Summit
Regional information, technology and media regulators will gather in the Virgin Islands on February 25–26 for the International Institute of Communications Caribbean Chapter meeting hosted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. The two-day forum will focus on how emerging technologies intersect with tourism, finance and regulation across Caribbean small island states.
The British Virgin Islands will host a regional summit of information, technology and media regulators later this month as the International Institute of Communications (IIC) Caribbean Chapter meets on February 25 and 26. Hosted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), the two-day conference takes place at the Tradewinds Conference Centre at Peter Island Resort under the theme “Caribbean FutureScapes: Regulation at the Intersection of Technology, Tourism and Finance.” The meeting will bring together ICT, telecommunications and broadcast media regulators alongside senior managers and decision-makers from business, industry and government across the region.
Organisers say sessions will tackle a range of issues central to small island economies, including converged regulation, the effects of emerging technologies on tourism-driven economies, fintech innovation, sustainable digital infrastructure and satellite communication services. Delegates are expected to examine policy trade-offs and explore regulatory solutions to support growth while protecting consumers.
For the BVI—a territory that relies heavily on tourism and financial services—the topics are directly relevant. Discussions about how new technologies affect visitor services, transport, payments and data protection could shape future regulations that impact local businesses, hoteliers, tour operators and fintech firms.
Sustainable digital infrastructure and satellite connectivity are also likely to feature as priorities for improving resilience, particularly after storms and in remote locations. TRC Chief Executive Officer Guy Malone said the commission is pleased to host the forum. “As the BVI’s national regulator for telecommunications, the TRC is excited to host this prestigious forum, providing a platform for insightful exchange on how regulation can drive sustainable growth in our region,” Malone said. “This event aligns with our mandate to promote telecommunications development and advise on forward-looking policies that benefit the BVI and the wider Caribbean community,” he added.
Organisers expect outcomes from the meeting to inform policy recommendations designed to advance innovation, competition and consumer protection across Caribbean societies and economies.
