BVI Implements Derelict Vehicle Disposal Fee to
The British Virgin Islands' Department of Motor Vehicles, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development, has started collecting a Derelict Vehicle Disposal Fee as part of the vehicle licensing process. This initiative aims to address the issue of abandoned vehicles, improve the territory's tourism appeal, and ensure a cleaner, safer environment.
In a move to preserve the natural beauty and environmental health of the British Virgin Islands, the Department of Motor Vehicles, under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, has introduced a Derelict Vehicle Disposal Fee. Effective from September 4, 2025, this fee is imposed on vehicle owners during the licensing process, with rates varying based on vehicle weight.
Vehicles weighing 1500–3000 lbs are subject to a $60 fee, those between 3000–6000 lbs are charged $85, and vehicles over 6,000 lbs incur a $125 fee. Honourable Vincent Wheatley, Minister for Health and Social Development, emphasized the critical role vehicle owners play in keeping the territory clean, safe, and environmentally sound through this initiative.
The collected fees will fund the removal, processing, and export of derelict vehicles, a significant problem that detracts from the islands' beauty and poses environmental and public health risks. The legislation also grants authorities the power to issue notices and impound vehicles left abandoned on both public and private properties.
Vehicle owners are given deadlines for the removal of their vehicles, beyond which the government will proceed with the removal and disposal. A public awareness campaign accompanies the implementation of the fee, aiming to educate residents about the importance of the initiative and encourage cooperation.
The Department of Waste Management is leveraging advanced waste management technologies to ensure effective disposal and, where possible, recycling of waste, further contributing to a sustainable environment for all residents and visitors. The introduction of the Derelict Vehicle Disposal Fee is a testament to the BVI's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.
