BVI Launches Step Initiative to Boost Solar
The BVI Government, under the leadership of Hon Kye M Rymer, has inaugurated the Solar Technology Energy Programme (STEP) aiming to reduce electricity costs through solar energy adoption. With zero customs duty on renewable energy products announced, the initiative promises significant savings for residents.
In a move to transition towards more sustainable energy solutions, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has taken a significant step with the launch of the Solar Technology Energy Programme (STEP), unveiled by Hon Kye M Rymer on August 24, 2025, during a visit to a solar panel installation at a residence in Threadfall Estate, Sea Cows Bay.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment for the territory in harnessing solar energy to combat high electricity costs. The STEP initiative, developed in collaboration with the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), represents the government's commitment to sustainability and economic savings for its residents.
On February 6, 2025, twenty-one residents were the inaugural cohort to sign up for STEP, embarking on a journey to generate their own electricity and significantly reduce their utility bills. Adding to the incentives, Hon Rymer announced a groundbreaking policy on September 1, 2025, eliminating customs duties on all renewable energy and energy-efficient products through August 31, 2030. "The sun is for free; you can just imagine the kinds of savings that you will have when you have a solar system to generate your energy for your home," he stated, encouraging Virgin Islanders to seize this opportunity for both environmental and economic benefits.
The initiative also focuses on capacity building within the community. Locals have been receiving training for the STEP Programme at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) through a certificate programme, ensuring that the skills required for installing and maintaining solar energy systems are developed locally.
Photon Innovation, a local company led by Mr Johnathan Cruz, was highlighted by Hon Rymer for its role in installing the solar panels, showcasing the government's support for local businesses in the green energy sector. This initiative not only promises to lower the cost of electricity for households across the BVI but also positions the territory as a leader in the Caribbean for renewable energy adoption.
