The British Virgin Islands is gearing up for a spectacular celebration of literature and culture with the return of the BVI Literary Arts Festival, scheduled to take place from November 6-9, 2025. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) in collaboration with the Department of Culture, the festival has grown from its digital inception in 2021 into a much-anticipated event that draws attention from across the globe, attracting over 500 attendees last year. Georges, President of HLSCC and the Virgin Islands Poet Laureate, emphasizes the festival's role in celebrating and informing about the local culture through literature, positioning it as a critical intersection of culture and tourism within the BVI.
The festival not only showcases renowned Caribbean literature but also focuses on nurturing local talent. Aspiring writers will have the opportunity to engage in workshops led by award-winning authors, agents, and publishers, providing invaluable insights into the global literary scene.
A particular highlight of the festival is its commitment to promoting youth literacy, with special events like the Literary Wonderland offering interactive, educational experiences for children on Virgin Gorda and Tortola. Previous festivals have featured literary giants such as Afua Hirsch and David Olusoga, and while the lineup for 2025 is yet to be announced, anticipation is high for another stellar roster of participants.
