BVI Marks National Caregivers Day
The Social Development Department has joined the community in observing National Caregivers Day, honouring caregivers who support aged care services across the Virgin Islands. Programme Director for Aged Care Trisha Smith-Gomes commended the team’s dedication, saying, “Today, we proudly recognise and celebrate all of our incredible caregivers who make a difference in the lives of those we serve each and every day.” Mrs Smith-Gomes noted that the aides pictured in the department’s release represent just a few of many professionals who form the backbone of aged care services in the Territory. “While only a handful may be pictured, they symbolise an entire team whose kindness, patience, and unwavering support bring comfort, dignity, and joy to our residents and clients,” she added, emphasising that caregiving is more than a profession. “It is a calling grounded in empathy, service, and humanity,” Mrs Smith-Gomes said, thanking caregivers for the relationships and moments of reassurance they provide.
The department’s statement highlighted the everyday work required to maintain quality care for older family members and vulnerable adults. Caregivers often provide personal care, emotional support and help with daily living activities that enable seniors to remain connected to family and community life, the release said, noting that this work strengthens families, uplifts residents and reinforces the Department’s mandate to protect and promote social well-being across the Territory.
The Social Development Department used the occasion to reaffirm its ongoing commitment to supporting caregivers and strengthening aged care services, saying it will continue efforts to maintain standards of care and support the staff who deliver services directly to residents and clients.
