BVI Pays Tribute To Mighty Sparrow
Virgin Islands leaders, including Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley and Deputy Speaker Dr. Karl Dawson, have paid tribute to the late calypso legend The Mighty Sparrow. The acclaimed Calypso King of the World performed in the Territory several times throughout his storied career, leaving an enduring mark on Caribbean culture.
Leaders across the Virgin Islands have paid tribute to the late calypso icon Slinger Francisco, internationally renowned as The Mighty Sparrow, remembering him as a cultural giant whose music served as the soundtrack of Caribbean life across multiple generations. Natalio Wheatley expressed profound appreciation for Sparrow's immense contributions to regional arts and heritage, noting that the Virgin Islands was fortunate to welcome the Calypso King of the World to its shores on numerous occasions.
Sparrow's performances in the Territory spanned decades, including a memorable show in November 2019 where he entertained a captivated Virgin Islands audience while seated in a wheelchair. Premier Wheatley noted that Sparrow possessed a rare gift for translating everyday reality, social issues, politics, and race relations into thought-provoking art.
Timeless classics such as Jean and Dinah, The Lizard, Obeah Wedding, Lying Excuses, and Drunk and Disorderly cemented his legacy on the global stage. On behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, the Premier extended heartfelt condolences to Sparrow's family and the people of Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago.
Deputy Speaker and First District Representative Dr. Karl Dawson also shared warm memories of hosting the calypsonian during his tenure as President of the H. Sparrow was a headline performer for the 2010–2011 HLSCC Performing Arts Series at the Eileen L. Dawson recalled that Sparrow thrilled a full auditorium with a dynamic repertoire that included witty social commentary, humorous tracks, and gospel selections.
During that visit, Sparrow met with late former Premier Ralph T. O'Neal and received an official commemorative plaque from then-Deputy Premier Dancia Penn. Sparrow's family noted that prior to his passing, the legendary entertainer embraced the Christian faith and was baptised into the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
His vast musical catalogue and cultural influence remain celebrated throughout the Caribbean and across the global diaspora.
