The Social Development Department is joining global organizations in observing ADHD Awareness Month throughout October under the theme, 'A Community of Support.' The initiative highlights the vital need for understanding, connection, and accessible resources to assist persons living with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder across the British Virgin Islands.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and frequently continues into adolescence and adulthood. While hyperactive symptoms may lessen with age, the condition presents uniquely in every individual. Some persons experience primary challenges with attention and organization, while others face hyperactivity and impulsivity, and many navigate a combination of both traits.

Department officials noted that ADHD is frequently overlooked in women and girls because their symptoms often differ from widely recognized behavioral patterns. Females are more likely to display inattentive characteristics, which can be subtler and harder to detect in classroom or home environments.

Furthermore, hyperactive symptoms in females may manifest as excessive talking rather than disruptive physical movements like running or climbing. The department is encouraging parents, caregivers, and educators across the Territory to pay close attention to persistent behavioral patterns that disrupt daily routines and learning.

Officials clarified that occasional distraction, forgetfulness, or restlessness does not necessarily mean an individual has ADHD, stressing that formal evaluations should always be conducted by qualified medical and mental health professionals. Throughout the month, the Disability Services Division of the Social Development Department is disseminating educational materials to enhance community awareness and dismantle long-standing misconceptions.

By promoting early intervention and open dialogue, the Ministry of Health and Social Development aims to build more inclusive environments in homes, schools, and workplaces where persons with ADHD can thrive.
