Team BVI has captured its first victory at the Chess Olympiad currently underway in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Kiara Phillip secured the win for the Women's team after defeating Bermuda's Francesca Creasall-Haycock in Round 3. Both the Open and Women's squads continue their campaign in the global tournament.
Team BVI has officially entered the win column at the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, following an impressive performance in the third round of the prestigious global competition. Kiara Phillip, playing on Board 4 for the Virgin Islands Women’s team, delivered the breakthrough result by defeating Bermuda’s Francesca Creasall-Haycock in their head-to-head match.
The milestone victory provided an uplifting boost for the entire BVI delegation as round-robin action continued for both the Open and Women’s squads. Earlier in the tournament, Team BVI faced formidable international competition during the opening rounds. The territory's Open team took on a competitive lineup from Suriname, while the Women’s team battled against Kosovo.
Despite hard-fought games across all boards, the Virgin Islands squads were unable to register wins in those initial matchups before the women's team found success against their regional counterparts from Bermuda. According to the BVI Chess Federation, participating in the Olympiad represents a defining opportunity for the territory's players.
The federation highlighted that the event stands as one of the most significant and respected team tournaments on the international chess calendar. Competing against world-class masters allows local players to test their strategies, build valuable international experience, and represent the Virgin Islands with pride on the global stage.
This year's Olympiad is recognized as the largest in the tournament's 102-year history, bringing together more than 200 national federations from across the globe in Samarkand. Over the course of 11 grueling rounds of over-the-board classical chess, competitors will continue to vie for team standings and individual rating points.
