BVI Telethon for Jamaica and Haiti
A multi-organisation telethon will broadcast across BVI media on Sunday, November 9 to raise $100,000 for relief and recovery in Jamaica and Haiti following Hurricane Melissa. The event is hosted by local service groups and faith organisations with support from the Jamaica Consulate and residents' association.
Hurricane Melissa has left families homeless and communities shattered in Jamaica and Haiti — and the BVI is organising a coordinated appeal to help. On Sunday, November 9, the BVI Telethon for Hurricane Melissa Relief will go live across local media: JTV Channel 55, Jahphix Television’s YouTube channel, and radio stations ZBVI, ZCCR and ZKING.
The telethon is being hosted by the Rotary and Lions families of the BVI, together with the BVI Red Cross, ADRA, and the BVI Christian Council, and has the backing of the Jamaica Consulate and the Association of Jamaica Residents in the BVI. Organisers have set an initial fundraising target of $100,000 to support urgent relief operations and longer-term recovery projects in affected communities in both countries.
The telethon aims to raise funds to provide shelter, food, medical supplies and rebuilding assistance for families displaced by the storm. Many residents of the British Virgin Islands maintain family, business and social ties with Jamaica and Haiti. Community leaders say that connection has driven swift local mobilisation and a willingness among civic groups to co-ordinate resources and volunteers.
The telethon brings together service clubs, faith groups and emergency-relief organisations to present a single, island-wide response that BVI residents can support. Broadcast organisers advise viewers and listeners to tune in on Sunday for details on how to donate, what supplies and services are most needed, and where local collection points — if any — will be set up.
