BVI to Invest Over $2 Million in
In a significant move to bolster education, the Government of the Virgin Islands has announced plans to invest more than two million dollars in upgrading schools across the Territory. The initiative aims to create safe, modern, and conducive learning environments, ensuring world-class facilities for students and teachers.
The Government of the Virgin Islands is set to make a landmark investment in the Territory's educational infrastructure, with over two million dollars allocated for the upgrading of schools in the coming year. This announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro, during the official launch of Education Month, emphasizing the government's commitment to providing high-quality learning environments.
According to Honourable de Castro, the investment is guided by structural assessments that have highlighted the urgent need for essential remedial works. These upgrades include waterproofing, roof repairs, the replacement of outdated windows and doors, and the installation of backup power generators.
The initiative also encompasses the modernization of plumbing and air conditioning systems to guarantee reliable water access and a comfortable atmosphere for both students and teachers. Enhanced security measures are also part of the upgrade plan, aiming to increase the safety of the Territory's schools.
The Minister underscored the belief that a world-class education system requires world-class facilities. Over the past two years, the government has significantly improved the education infrastructure, with investments growing from $850,000 in 2023 to an ambitious $2.5 million in the current year.
Additionally, the budget for this year includes funding for the design of a secondary educational facility focused on developing technical and vocational skills, addressing local labor force gaps. Partnerships have also played a crucial role in these advancements, with Unite BVI collaborating with the government to install five new playgrounds at primary schools and moving forward with the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Redevelopment Project.
Despite some delays, the project is in the design phase, with a construction timeline to be announced following the finalization of costings and approvals. "Our investments are not just about repairs; they are about resilience," stated Honourable de Castro. By addressing these essential needs, the government aims to ensure that schools can withstand environmental challenges, providing safe and enduring learning spaces.
