BVI to Observe Diplomatic Week
The Virgin Islands will observe Diplomatic Week for the first time, a series of events timed alongside regional diplomatic activities, including Friendship Day in the USVI and a UK Overseas Territories caucus hosted by the Premier. The week will feature a welcome reception, honours for contributors to international relations, and a panel on how Overseas Territories engage on the global stage.
The British Virgin Islands will mark its first-ever Diplomatic Week, timed to coincide with a cluster of regionally focused diplomatic activities, Acting Director of the International Affairs Secretariat Dwynel D. Davis said in a Government Information Services (GIS) report dated Friday, October 10, 2025.
Davis described the occasion as “quite meaningful” because it takes place amid other diplomatic events. The programme begins with the US Virgin Islands hosting Friendship Day from October 18 to 19, in which representatives from the BVI are scheduled to participate before returning home for local observances.
Locally, the week will include the territory’s Heroes and Foreparents Day celebrations and a major event hosted by the Premier: the UK Caribbean Overseas Territories caucus. The caucus will bring together representatives from all of the United Kingdom’s Caribbean Overseas Territories to discuss shared priorities and challenges.
Ahead of the leaders’ caucus, the Premier will host a welcome reception to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the Virgin Islands in international relations and diplomacy. That evening will be followed by a public panel discussion focused on the importance of international relations for Overseas Territories, Davis said.
Speakers will examine how territories such as the BVI conduct paradiplomacy — the pursuit of external relations and international engagement by subnational entities — while the United Kingdom retains responsibility for external affairs. Discussion topics are expected to include how territories represent their interests on the global stage, build partnerships for economic development, advocate on climate and disaster resilience, and coordinate on consular, trade and maritime matters.
For BVI residents, the week offers a closer look at how international decisions and relationships can affect everyday life: access to disaster relief, climate funding, travel and trade arrangements, tourism promotion, and regional cooperation on fisheries and maritime security. The events also aim to raise the territory’s profile and strengthen networks that may attract investment and technical assistance.
The International Affairs Secretariat and the Office of the Premier have positioned Diplomatic Week as both a celebration of existing relationships and a forum to chart collaborative steps forward among Overseas Territories and their partners.
