BVI Volleyball Season Cancelled Over Venue Conflicts
The Virgin Islands Volleyball Association has officially cancelled its 2026 Power League season due to persistent scheduling issues at the Multipurpose Sports Complex. The tournament had already faced multiple postponements before organizers decided to forgo this year's schedule entirely. The decision highlights the ongoing demand and limited indoor court availability for competitive sports in the Territory.
The Virgin Islands Volleyball Association has made the difficult decision to forgo its 2026 Power League season following ongoing scheduling conflicts at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Tortola. The tournament, which is one of the premier competitive volleyball events in the Territory, had already experienced substantial delays.
Initially slated for a spring start, organizers were forced to postpone the opening to the autumn months as they navigated facility availability. In August, VIVA President Stephen Payne indicated that organizers had targeted a revised start date of September 13. However, continued calendar congestion at the venue prevented the league from getting underway as planned.
The complex, which serves as the primary indoor sporting facility for the British Virgin Islands, frequently juggles competing demands from national federations, community groups, and government departments. The timeline was further impacted by updates to government-organized events.
An Industrial Volleyball League organized by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, originally scheduled to commence on September 23, saw its start date pushed back to September 30. With overlapping schedules and limited access to court time, Payne confirmed that the association was forced to reconsider and ultimately halt plans for the Power League this year.
The cancellation is a setback for local athletes and supporters who rely on the league for regular, high-level competition and athletic development. It also underscores broader challenges regarding the capacity and scheduling management of the Territory's premier indoor athletic facility.
With the 2026 season officially abandoned, local volleyball officials and players will now turn their focus to future programming and working alongside facility administrators to secure dedicated court time for upcoming seasons.
