BVI Welcomes 35th Karibik Trophy Flotilla
Around 80 international sailors have arrived in the Virgin Islands for the 35th Karibik Trophy, marking the 20th time the Territory has hosted the gathering. The event brings a welcome economic boost to local marinas, dining spots, and marine sector businesses across several islands.
The British Virgin Islands is once again serving as the backdrop for international sailing enthusiasts, welcoming approximately 80 sailors for the 35th staging of the Karibik Trophy. Setting sail from Hodge's Creek Marina on Tortola, this year's edition marks the 20th time the Territory has hosted the event since its inaugural visit in 1991.
Led by Owner and Managing Director Hartmut Holtmann, the visiting flotilla brings together a vibrant mix of returning sailors and newcomers. Although the Karibik Trophy originated as a competitive regatta, it has since evolved into a leisurely, flotilla-style cruising event. The modern format prioritises camaraderie, island exploration, and coastal leisure, giving participating crews the freedom to sail at their own pace while enjoying daily recommendations for local restaurants, bars, and pristine anchorages.
This year's sailing itinerary covers several popular destinations across the archipelago. The traditional route guides participants through Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and Norman Island, with visits to Peter Island and Marina Cay also included on the schedule. This widespread route ensures that tourism spending and engagement reach multiple sister islands throughout the voyage.
McCoy welcomed the return of the flotilla, highlighting that hosting 20 editions of the event reflects the Virgin Islands' enduring appeal within the German-speaking sailing market. McCoy pointed out the substantial economic activity generated across the local economy, as visiting crews patronise marinas, grocery stores, restaurants, and other marine-related businesses.
The economic impact often extends beyond the official sailing schedule, with several sailors choosing to prolong their vacations with land-based accommodation on Tortola and Virgin Gorda before or after the event.
