BVIEC Launches 'Watts Going On!' Week to
The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) opened its doors for 'BVIEC Presents: Watts Going On!' — a week of tours and learning activities held November 10–14 under the theme 'Connecting Education, Energy & Opportunity' (JTV). The programme invited senior high and secondary students, educators and business leaders to tour the Henry Wilfred Smith Power Station and the Anegada Power Station to learn how electricity is generated, managed and delivered across the Territory.
The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) this week opened its doors for 'BVIEC Presents: Watts Going On!', a public engagement programme aimed at bringing students, educators and business leaders into the heart of the Territory’s electricity operations. According to Jahphix Television (JTV), the week of educational activities ran from November 10–14 under the theme 'Connecting Education, Energy & Opportunity.' BVIEC hosted guided tours at the Henry Wilfred Smith Power Station in Pockwood Pond and the Anegada Power Station to demonstrate how electricity is generated, managed and distributed across the islands.
Geared primarily toward senior high and secondary school students, the initiative was designed to give participants a practical complement to classroom learning and a clearer picture of career paths in the energy sector. Participating institutions listed by BVIEC and reported by local media included BVI Seventh-day Adventist School, St George’s Secondary School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Ciboney Centre for Excellence, Elmore Stoutt High School, Cedar International School, Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, Agape (Secondary Division), Imagination Academy (Secondary Division) and H.
A special tour was arranged for students from the Claudia Creque Educational Centre at the Anegada Power Station, giving that community a dedicated opportunity to see operations on their island up close. BVIEC’s Public Relations and Marketing Media Manager, Kamal Haynes, described the initiative as more than an open house. 'This year’s Watts Going On! initiative represents more than just a tour—it’s about sparking curiosity, building understanding, and creating pathways for the next generation to explore careers in energy,' Haynes said (quoted in JTV and VINO).
He added that the evolving energy industry offers opportunities for innovation and that early engagement helps inspire technical curiosity among young people. The week concluded on Friday, November 14, with a session for members of the local business community. That guided tour at the Henry Wilfred Smith Power Station gave private-sector representatives first-hand insight into BVIEC’s day-to-day operations, sustainability initiatives and commitment to service excellence, aiming to strengthen links between business needs and the utility’s planning and development (JTV).
BVIEC also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports and Chief Education Officer Mrs. Crabbe for coordinating school participation and supporting initiatives that promote career development, a partnership noted in coverage by both VINO and JTV. For BVI residents, 'Watts Going On!' highlights the central role of the energy sector in daily life and signals a renewed effort to cultivate local technical skills and workforce pathways.
By opening facilities and inviting hands-on learning, BVIEC intends to connect classroom lessons with real-world operations and inspire the next generation of energy professionals across the Territory.
