BVIEC Seeks Installers For Solar Programme
The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest seeking qualified contractors for its Solar Technology Energy Programme. The government initiative aims to install grid-tied home solar systems across the Territory with zero upfront costs for homeowners. Eligible solar installation firms must submit their documentation by September 11, 2026.
The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Works, has formally invited eligible solar installation firms to submit expressions of interest for the Territory's Solar Technology Energy Programme. The initiative, known as S.T.E.P., is designed to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy across the Virgin Islands by installing grid-tied solar systems on residential properties without requiring upfront equipment or installation costs from homeowners.
Under the programme, systems will operate alongside the regular BVIEC power grid, enabling participating residents to export surplus electricity back into the network in exchange for energy credits. Officials note that the programme is expected to lower household electricity bills by up to 50 percent once the initial setup costs are fully paid off.
In addition to direct financial relief for residents, the shift toward residential solar generation supports broader national goals to diminish the Territory's reliance on imported fossil fuels and transition toward cleaner energy sources. To qualify for participation, interested solar contractors must demonstrate the necessary technical capabilities and regulatory compliance.
At a minimum, applicants are required to possess a National American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners Associate certification or recognized equivalent, a valid trade license issued by the BVI Department of Trade, and a licensed electrician on staff with proven experience in grid-tied solar photovoltaic installations.
Prospective firms must submit their expressions of interest via email to the BVIEC procurement team. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, September 11, 2026, at 4:00 PM. The Corporation noted that this notice serves strictly as an invitation for expressions of interest and does not constitute a binding contract or guarantee selection for the programme.
