BVIEC Upgrades Virgin Gorda Power Grid
The BVI Electricity Corporation has launched a major overhead maintenance programme across Virgin Gorda to improve grid reliability and reduce power outages. Specialized live-line crews are conducting repairs while keeping the system energised to prevent widespread service disruptions. Motorists are urged to exercise caution around roadside work crews over the coming weeks.
The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has launched a major maintenance programme on its overhead electrical infrastructure across Virgin Gorda, aiming to reinforce the network and curb preventable power outages. The extensive exercise commenced on Monday, August 24, and is expected to span three to four weeks as crews move systematically across the sister island.
Work began in The Valley and is scheduled to progress through North Sound and neighbouring communities. To reduce the impact on residents, businesses, and visitors, a significant portion of the maintenance is being conducted by BVIEC's specialized live-line technicians. This approach enables technicians to perform repairs and replace aging equipment while the power grid remains fully energised, preventing the need for extensive daytime service interruptions.
A key component of the programme is the replacement of existing aluminium jumpers with durable copper jumpers. Copper components are substantially better equipped to withstand Virgin Gorda's marine environment, where constant exposure to salt spray and humid coastal air accelerates corrosion.
Maintenance crews are also replacing worn pins, pin insulators, fuse cutouts, dishes, and supporting hardware. Transmission and Distribution Engineer Leroy Abraham stated that the Corporation prioritised the initiative after conducting targeted assessments of the overhead grid. While maintenance cannot eliminate all outages, Abraham highlighted that proactively replacing vulnerable parts will significantly reduce disruptions linked to degraded infrastructure and improve reliability islandwide.
Although BVIEC routinely services its underground and overhead systems, officials noted this is one of the most concentrated overhead maintenance campaigns carried out on Virgin Gorda in recent years. BVIEC is urging motorists to exercise extra caution when traveling near utility vehicles, machinery, and personnel operating along roadways.
Drivers should reduce speed and stay alert. On narrow roads where equipment may restrict traffic, motorists are encouraged to safely signal crew members so arrangements can be made for safe passage. The Corporation thanked the Virgin Gorda community for its ongoing cooperation and patience as it continues to invest in the Territory's power infrastructure.
