The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) hosted a three-day Healthcare Transformation and Leadership Development Workshop for Nurse Managers, Nursing Supervisors and Charge Nurses from June 22–24, 2026, aimed at strengthening unit-level leadership, quality improvement and patient outcomes. ROAD TOWN, Tortola — The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has reinforced its commitment to improving patient care by investing in the leadership skills of its nursing cadre. From June 22 to 24, Nurse Managers, Nursing Supervisors and Charge Nurses from across the Territory attended a three-day Healthcare Transformation and Leadership Development Workshop designed to enhance clinical excellence, operational efficiency and continuous quality improvement.
The programme was delivered in partnership with Healthcare Transformation Solutions (HTS). BVIHSA said the training focused on practical, evidence-based approaches to identifying operational challenges, implementing solutions, improving staff engagement and leading quality improvement initiatives at the unit level.
According to a VINO report, HTS is a clinician-founded consultancy serving healthcare systems and ministries across the Caribbean and “operationalising strategy where strategy actually has to work — at the unit level, on the shift that matters, measured by metrics that hold.” VINO also reported that HTS was founded by a registered nurse with deep Caribbean healthcare knowledge and an active clinical career across multiple hospitals in the United States.
Participants worked through real-world scenarios and were guided to develop unit-specific action plans and quality improvement projects tailored to their departments. Those projects are expected to be rolled out across BVIHSA facilities in the coming months, with monitoring planned to measure impact on patient safety, service delivery and staff performance.
BVIHSA said in a statement, “Through strategic partnerships and continuous professional development, we are empowering our nursing leaders to drive innovation, quality improvement, and positive patient outcomes across our healthcare system. Director of Nursing Services Pearla Sylvester-Thomas described the workshop as "a significant investment in the future of healthcare in the Virgin Islands," noting that "quality patient care begins with strong leadership." She emphasised that equipping Nurse Managers and Charge Nurses with leadership tools strengthens the organisation’s capacity to deliver safe, efficient and patient-centred care.
Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Jacinth Hannibal welcomed the initiative, saying that "developing nursing leadership is critical to building a resilient healthcare system." Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley also commended the collaboration, adding that strategic investments in healthcare professionals ultimately benefit the wider community and position the health system for long-term success.
BVIHSA officials said the workshop follows the Authority’s celebration of International Nurses Week from May 6 to 12, 2026, held under the theme ‘Empowered Nurses Save Lives,’ and is part of a broader strategy to build organisational capacity through strategic partnerships and continuous professional development.
For residents of the BVI, the training aims to translate into faster, safer and more consistent care across hospitals and clinics, as frontline leaders implement improvements that reduce delays, enhance clinical decision-making and boost staff morale. BVIHSA reiterated its ongoing commitment to developing a highly skilled healthcare workforce capable of delivering safe, effective and patient-centred services throughout the Virgin Islands, with follow-up support and formal evaluation planned as units begin to implement their action plans.
