BVI's 'Boss' Receives Carifesta Icon Award
Eustace C. Freeman, longtime lead singer of the Showtime Band, has been honoured with a CARIFESTA XV Icon Award in recognition of his sustained contribution to Caribbean arts and culture. The award was presented on October 16, 2025 by Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Luce D. Hodge Smith, and Freeman said he was surprised, grateful and proud to represent the Virgin Islands abroad.
Freeman — affectionately known as "Boss" and longtime lead singer of the popular Showtime Band — has been formally recognised with a CARIFESTA XV Icon Award for his contribution to Caribbean arts and culture. Freeman delivered an acclaimed performance at CARIFESTA XV in Bridgetown, Barbados in late August, and the award was officially presented to him on October 16, 2025 by the Honourable Luce D.
Hodge Smith, Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture (R4). A small contingent of the Virgin Islands delegation that attended CARIFESTA XV was on hand for the presentation. In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), Freeman said he was both surprised and deeply grateful. "My immediate reaction was grateful.
I definitely was grateful and surprised when I learned about that award. It is always a good feeling to be recognised for the work you do over time," he said. Freeman added that the honour means a great deal to his support team and family, and that it symbolises "longevity, love, passion, dedication to the art form." He described himself as "humble and appreciative" of the recognition.
CARIFESTA, the Caribbean Festival of Arts, is a regional showcase that brings together musicians, dancers, visual artists and cultural practitioners from across the Caribbean. The Icon Award is one of the festival's highest honours, reserved for individuals who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to Caribbean arts and culture.
Freeman praised the overall participation of the Virgin Islands at CARIFESTA XV as an "excellent representation" of BVI culture. "It was a great delegation that went forward with it, not only entertainers, but artists, dancers, and people from all areas of the art form," he said, emphasising the importance of showcasing the Territory's culture to the wider Caribbean and world.
He called his ambassadorial role a source of pride and said he looks forward to more opportunities to represent the Virgin Islands. The BVI secured more than one recognition at CARIFESTA XV: Mr Sprauve, an acclaimed musician, entrepreneur and cultural ambassador, was also presented with a CARIFESTA XV Icon Award on August 24, 2025 in Bridgetown.
