BVI's Raul “Jougo” Sprauve Shines with Icon
Virgin Islands musician Raul “Jougo” Sprauve was honoured with the Carifesta XV Icon Award in Bridgetown, Barbados, recognizing his significant contributions to Caribbean arts and culture. This accolade was part of the VI’s vibrant participation in the festival, which also included leadership in discussions on cultural restoration and climate resilience.
The 15th annual Caribbean Festival of the Arts (Carifesta), held in Bridgetown, Barbados, was a memorable event for the Virgin Islands, particularly for musician Raul “Jougo” Sprauve, who received the prestigious Carifesta XV Icon Award on Sunday. Sprauve, known for his dynamic contributions to the Caribbean arts scene, was honored for his significant impact on music and culture in the region.
The award, one of the festival's highest honors, reflects Sprauve’s extensive achievements as a musician, teacher, and entrepreneur. With 15 Road March titles to his name and collaborations with Grammy-award-winning artists, Sprauve’s influence spans beyond the Virgin Islands, touching the global music scene.
His band, VIBE (Virgin Islands-Based Entertainment), and his work at Home Grown Studios highlight his commitment to promoting Caribbean music. Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley praised Sprauve’s recognition, stating it underscores the territory's deep talent pool and cultural influence.
Wheatley, participating in Carifesta XV, led a panel on cultural restoration and climate resilience, emphasizing the role of identity, history, and indigenous practices in confronting climate challenges. The panel, which included leaders and experts from across the Caribbean, underscored the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern policy and planning to ensure sustainable development.
The Virgin Islands' 53-member delegation, including 13 students, showcased their talents in music, dance, theatre, and crafts under the theme “Caribbean roots; global excellence,” further highlighting the territory’s rich cultural heritage and commitment to excellence on the international stage.
Carifesta XV served not only as a platform for celebrating Caribbean arts and culture but also as a critical venue for discussing pressing regional issues such as climate resilience, tourism, and education. Sprauve’s award and the Virgin Islands' active participation underscore the territory's vibrant culture and its pivotal role in advancing Caribbean unity and excellence.
