Cabinet Approves National Tourism Policy
The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has officially approved the National Tourism Policy to guide the sustainable development of the territory's primary economic sector. The framework sets clear objectives to enhance visitor experiences, empower local businesses, and protect the islands' natural resources. It also aligns local tourism growth with regional standards established across the Eastern Caribbean.
The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has officially approved the National Tourism Policy, establishing a strategic, coordinated, and sustainable blueprint for the future development of the territory's premier economic pillar. The approval was granted during Cabinet's meeting on 17 June following extensive stakeholder consultations.
The newly adopted framework aligns with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Common Sustainable Tourism Policy and provides clear guidelines designed to benefit local operators, investors, and residents across the sister islands. As a principal driver of the Virgin Islands economy, the tourism sector directly impacts local employment, business activity, government revenue, and community development.
The new policy establishes a shared vision for both public and private sectors. It focuses on strengthening the territory's competitiveness, improving overall visitor experiences, supporting homegrown enterprise, developing the local workforce, and safeguarding the natural and cultural assets upon which the industry depends.
Premier and Minister of Finance, Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development, Honourable Dr. Wheatley, emphasized that the policy was designed to deliver tangible, long-term results rather than simply serving as a symbolic document. He stated that the policy creates a clear basis for accountability with measurable outcomes, allowing progress to be systematically tracked and evaluated over time.
Premier Wheatley thanked ministry personnel, industry stakeholders, and community partners for contributing their insights, noting that their collective efforts have laid a strong foundation to ensure the industry's competitiveness for generations to come. Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Honourable Luce Hodge-Smith, noted that the policy marks a vital step forward in advancing economic growth and resilience.
She highlighted that aligning government, industry, and community priorities will ensure the territory expands local opportunities while elevating its standing as a premier global destination. Permanent Secretary Joseph Smith-Abbott commended public officers for their technical expertise and dedication in shaping the policy.
He affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development remains committed to evidence-based planning and responsible management as the policy moves toward active implementation across the territory.
