Creative Waves Opens New Arts Hub
Creative Waves, launched in 2024, has opened a permanent gallery and community space at Road Reef Plaza in May 2025 after a year of travelling exhibitions and programmes across the BVI. The non-profit will host rotating exhibitions, classes, performances and community initiatives — including an arts rehabilitation programme at HM Prison — and is seeking ongoing support from donors and residents.
Creative Waves, a community arts charity that began programming in 2024, has opened a permanent gallery and activity space at Road Reef Plaza, a short ride from the ferry dock and central Road Town. The new Creative Waves Arts Hub, unveiled in May 2025 with help from private and corporate donors, provides a year-round home for exhibitions, classes and community-led events.
Since its launch, Creative Waves has delivered public art commissions at the Road Town Jetty and the Jost van Dyke ferry dock, a contemporary mural on Ridge Road, an art exhibition by local high school students and an arts rehabilitation programme for inmates at HM Prison in Balsam Ghut.
The charity has also run free arts and crafts events for children, open art classes, a performing arts festival and numerous smaller charity-centred activities across the islands. The new gallery will present regularly changing shows by local painters, photographers and crafters, and organisers say international artists will be invited to exhibit and share skills with the local community.
The exhibition programme will be paired with a busy schedule of hands-on classes, talks, roundtable discussions, historical screenings and smaller music and theatre performances. Bookings and event information are available via the organisation’s website and in-person at the hub. Founder Sophie Stanton, who brings 25 years of experience supporting emerging artists and creating collaborative cultural projects, said the hub aims to bridge artists and audiences across generations. "I am eager to encourage dialogue and interaction between the artists practicing in the BVI today and an increasingly curious audience — from young children to future patrons and collectors," she said. "I hope that at every stage of life, people will be able to come and experience the arts... and help to ignite creativity and cultural expression." Creative Waves is registered as a 501(c)(3) and as a Non-Profit Organisation in the British Virgin Islands.
Organisers say continued funding is essential to sustain programming, support local creatives and expand outreach, including opportunities for traditional craft practitioners to teach and tell their stories. For BVI residents, the hub offers nearby access to creative learning, exhibition opportunities and community events that can strengthen cultural tourism and provide new outlets for young artists.
