DDM Launches Sister Islands Community Preparedness Webinar
The Department of Disaster Management has launched a three-part virtual webinar series throughout September to enhance disaster resilience across the Territory, with a special emphasis on the sister islands. The British Virgin Islands Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has officially launched a three-part virtual webinar series aimed at boosting emergency preparedness and disaster resilience across the Territory, with a dedicated focus on supporting the sister islands. Titled the Sister Islands Community Preparedness Webinar Series, the initiative features targeted sessions designed to help residents better understand regional hazards and learn practical, life-saving measures to prepare for potential emergencies.
The virtual workshops will take place across three consecutive Thursday evenings in September. The series officially kicks off on September 3 with an informative session on Storm and Hurricane Awareness, offering timely guidance during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. The second session, scheduled for September 10, will focus on Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness, educating the public on regional seismic risks, warning signs, and essential safety protocols.
The final session, set for September 17, will guide participants through Creating Your Family Emergency Plan, equipping households with the tools needed to coordinate communication, emergency supply kits, and evacuation strategies. According to the DDM, while the program is specifically structured to address the unique logistical and geographic needs of residents on Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and surrounding cays, the webinars are open to everyone across the Virgin Islands.
