The Department of Disaster Management has carried out its scheduled August test of the National Early Warning Multi-hazard Alert System across the British Virgin Islands. The routine drill serves as an essential component of the territory's disaster preparedness strategy, verifying that all warning mechanisms function effectively to safeguard lives and property during emergencies.

Regular testing of the alert infrastructure is especially critical as the region navigates the peak months of the Atlantic hurricane season. The comprehensive multi-hazard network is designed to deliver rapid, widespread warnings to residents and visitors across Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and the outer cays during a broad range of threats, including severe tropical cyclones, tsunamis, flash floods, and other emergencies.

The early warning network relies on an integrated suite of communication tools. These include strategically placed community warning sirens, broadcast interruptions on local radio stations, emergency mobile notifications via the DDM Alert app, SMS broadcasts, and official VHF radio frequencies.

Monthly tests allow technical teams to evaluate sound coverage, verify signal transmissions, and promptly address any equipment malfunctions. Disaster management authorities continue to encourage residents and local business owners to treat these tests as reminders to maintain their personal and operational readiness.

Families are advised to review evacuation procedures, secure necessary emergency supplies, and confirm that all household members recognize the sounds and instructions associated with the warning system. Community members who noticed any siren malfunctions, experienced reception issues, or have questions regarding the ongoing testing schedule are urged to report their feedback to the Department of Disaster Management.

Inquiries can be directed to the department by telephone at (284) 468-4200 or by email at ddm@gov.vg.
