DDM To Test Early Warning System
The Department of Disaster Management will activate the National Early Warning Multi-hazard Alert System on October 15 as part of the annual ShakeOut earthquake exercise. Test messages will sound across territory-wide sirens, mobile apps, and broadcast channels. While response to the test alert is not mandatory, the public is encouraged to practice earthquake safety drills.
The Department of Disaster Management has announced that the National Early Warning Multi-hazard Alert System will be activated across the Virgin Islands on October 15 as part of the annual ShakeOut earthquake exercise. During the exercise, residents throughout the Territory should expect to hear test messages transmitted through early warning sirens, the official DDM mobile application, emergency radio broadcasts, and other integrated alert channels.
Disaster officials clarified that while the system will be triggered to ensure operational readiness, the general public is not required to take mandatory action in direct response to the test broadcast. However, authorities strongly encourage community members, schools, businesses, and government agencies to use the occasion to test their preparedness plans by practicing the standard earthquake response: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
Following the initial drill, participants are advised to carry out additional safety measures suitable to their specific locations, such as verifying evacuation paths and checking emergency kits. The Virgin Islands sits in an active seismic zone in the northeastern Caribbean, making routine preparedness drills critical for safeguarding lives and property.
Testing the early warning infrastructure also enables disaster management officials to confirm that all communication links and sirens remain fully functional ahead of any real-world emergency. Residents and organisations interested in joining the drill can register their participation online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/shakeout2026.
For additional guidance on customising earthquake safety plans for homes, schools, or workplaces, the public is invited to contact the Department of Disaster Management at (284) 468-4200 or by email at ddm@gov.vg.
