Dear Virgin Gorda Residents, Although I am currently off island on duty travel, I have been in constant contact with the Ministry team and the Department of Waste Management since the fire broke out at the Virgin Gorda Dumpsite yesterday. I want to assure residents that this situation has my full attention.
I extend my sincere thanks to the Department of Waste Management, the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the private contractors, and the community support whose work and vigilance brought the fire under control. The dumpsite remains closed, so kindly stay clear of the area and allow our responders to work safely.
If you live nearby, stay indoors as much as possible and keep your windows and doors closed. Please check on your elderly neighbours, young children and anyone living with asthma, heart conditions or other respiratory illnesses. If you experience difficulty breathing, severe coughing, dizziness or nausea, seek medical attention right away.
