The Government of the Virgin Islands has confirmed that Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr. is acting in the office of Governor from Thursday 14 May to Friday 29 May 2026 while Governor Daniel Pruce is out of the Territory. The Government of the Virgin Islands has announced that Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr. will act in the office of Governor from Thursday 14 May to Friday 29 May 2026 while His Excellency Governor Daniel Pruce is out of the Territory. Archer’s Oath of Allegiance and Oath for Due Execution of Office were administered at Government House by Her Lordship the Honourable Justice Abbas Mithani KC, the Government said. The swearing-in follows Section 37(1)(a) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007, which states: “During any period when the office of Governor is vacant, or the Governor is absent from the Virgin Islands or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his or her office, the Deputy Governor shall during His Majesty’s pleasure, act in the office of Governor and shall perform the functions of that office accordingly.” (Government of the Virgin Islands) As Acting Governor, Mr.
Archer will undertake the constitutional and ceremonial duties of the Governor’s office during this period. Those duties typically include representing the Crown in the Territory, assenting to legislation, and performing functions related to the public service and external affairs as required.
The Government emphasised that this temporary arrangement is standard practice under the Constitution and ensures continuity of leadership and administration while the Governor is overseas. Residents and public sector staff were reassured that routine government operations will continue without interruption.
The Office of the Deputy Governor, one of the Constitutionally Established Departments, remains the central coordination point between Government House and other departmental services, the announcement says.
