Dr John W. Smith Appointed to Bvihsa
The Ministry of Health and Social Development has appointed Dr John W. Smith, MD, to the Board of the BVI Health Services Authority for a two-year term from 15 September 2025 to 14 September 2027, the Government announced in a press release. The Government of the Virgin Islands has announced the appointment of Dr John W. Smith, MD, to serve as a member of the Board of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) for the period 15 September 2025 to 14 September 2027, according to a press release from the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
The Ministry said Dr Smith brings more than two decades of advanced clinical practice and healthcare leadership to the Territory’s health system. He trained at leading institutions including New York Medical College | St Vincent’s Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College, the Mayo Clinic and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and his medical career spans general medicine and critical care through to trauma, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, and advanced plastic and reconstructive surgery (Ministry of Health and Social Development press release).
Beyond his bedside work, Dr Smith has held senior clinical roles and served on hospital committees. He has contributed to medical education as a Clinical Instructor at New York Medical College and as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the New York Institute of Technology, the Ministry said.
He also works as a medical-legal consultant and serves on several community boards in New York. The BVIHSA Board provides governance for public hospitals and clinics across the Territory, guiding strategic planning, clinical standards and the patient experience. The Ministry said Dr Smith will support the Board’s work in advancing strategic planning, improving clinical quality and enhancing patient-centred care, with the expectation that board-level decisions will translate into service delivery priorities at public health facilities (Ministry of Health and Social Development).
In a related development reported by VINO, the Ministry also appointed four experienced healthcare professionals to the Nurses and Midwives Council for the period 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2028: Mrs Rosa Ravariere-Seaman, Mrs Beth Hanley-Scatliffe, Mrs Hardia S. The Ministry emphasised that strong professional governance for nurses and midwives is essential to maintaining high standards of care across the Territory.
