Environmental Assessment Completed at Nurse Iris O’Neal
An independent environmental assessment has been completed at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda, with air and surface samples dispatched to Florida for analysis. Health authorities and government ministries are simultaneously carrying out deep cleaning, ventilation servicing, and priority roof repairs before determining when the facility can safely reopen.
Laboratory test results assessing the environmental safety and air quality at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda are expected within the next two to three weeks, as health authorities advance remediation and structural repair works across the facility. According to the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), environmental firm Dynamic 360 Support Services concluded an independent onsite assessment at the clinic on Wednesday, September 16.
The inspection entailed comprehensive visual examinations, surface swabbing, atmospheric testing, and sample collection. The collected samples were subsequently dispatched to PRO LAB in Florida for specialized laboratory analysis. Healthcare operations were recently relocated out of the building after staff and patient concerns arose regarding indoor air quality.
The temporary closure followed prior service disruptions connected to staffing shortages at the Virgin Gorda facility. While awaiting the final laboratory reports, the BVIHSA Environmental and Support Services team has executed a thorough deep cleaning of the premises. Concurrently, Al’s Marine Air Condition and Refrigeration Services was contracted to service the clinic's air-conditioning units and clean all ventilation systems.
Five indoor air-quality monitors have also been installed throughout the clinic to enable ongoing real-time data tracking and surveillance of indoor conditions. Simultaneously, infrastructure improvements are moving forward. The Ministry of Health and Social Development confirmed that planned roof repairs at the clinic are being executed as an urgent priority, with contractor Professional Roofing engaged to complete the works under the Ministry’s direct management and supervision.
During the building's temporary closure, Virgin Gorda residents can access 24-hour emergency medical care at St Mary’s Anglican Church Hall. Other essential medical services—including routine vaccinations, wound dressing, community home visits, and prescription collections—continue to be facilitated through temporary alternative setups across the island.
BVIHSA officials stated that once the laboratory findings arrive, the Authority will review the data and recommendations alongside the completed remediation and roof works to establish the next steps for safely reoccupying the facility. The Authority reiterated its commitment to keeping the Virgin Gorda community informed as facility works progress, while expressing gratitude to patients, medical staff, and residents for their continued patience and cooperation.
