FSC Awards First Robert Mathavious Scholarships
Three Virgin Islanders have been named the inaugural recipients of the BVI Financial Services Commission Robert A. Mathavious Scholarship Grant. The grant will fully fund their tuition for compliance and governance studies at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
The BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC) has named Ms. Tameika Marshall Campbell as the first recipients of the Robert A. The announcement coincides with the first anniversary of the passing of Dr. Mathavious, the Commission's founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Mathavious, affectionately known across the Territory as "Mr. Mac," spent decades steering the development and regulation of the Virgin Islands' financial services sector. Through the grant, each recipient will have their tuition covered to pursue specialized courses in anti-money laundering (AML), governance, risk management, and compliance at the H.
Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services (RMI). The annual scholarships provide up to $5,000 per recipient. According to the FSC, the three awardees were chosen from a competitive pool of seven applicants following a thorough evaluation process.
An appointed committee of senior Commission officers independently scored each candidate based on their submitted materials and individual interview performance. FSC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Baker congratulated the recipients, highlighting the significance of the award in sustaining the Territory's economic pillar.
Baker stated that the Commission made a deliberate effort to honour Dr. Mathavious and expand his legacy by empowering the next generation of industry professionals. He noted that equipping local practitioners with vital skills through the institute bearing his name is one of the most meaningful ways to build upon Dr.
Mathavious' stellar contributions to the Territory. The grant programme was established to address critical knowledge and skill gaps in the financial services sector, including compliance, virtual assets, FinTech, trust and corporate services, and risk management. The FSC confirmed that the scholarship will remain an ongoing initiative, supporting three aspiring financial services professionals each year.
Details regarding the next application cycle will be announced in due course.
