Gac Officially Launches in the BVI
Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) was officially launched in the Virgin Islands at an event hosted by Tortola Auto Group, drawing a large and diverse crowd. Tortola Auto Group’s Managing Director Shan Mohamed said the arrival of GAC offers more vehicle choices across price points and signals a positive sign for both consumers and the local economy.
A well-attended launch event this week marked the official arrival of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC) in the Virgin Islands, with local dealership Tortola Auto Group unveiling a new range of GAC vehicles to the public. GAC is a state-owned Chinese automaker based in Guangzhou, Guangdong.
The company has built a reputation internationally for solid initial quality and strong value for money, and the brand’s entry into the BVI market represents an expansion of choice for motorists on the islands. At the showcase, Tortola Auto Group Managing Director Shan Mohamed welcomed a cross-section of residents and guests, saying the economic outlook remains positive despite local challenges. "We're very excited to launch a GAC brand.
I think the future looks bright, not only from a business perspective but from a consumer perspective. But now we have another fantastic choice or choices," Mohamed said. Mohamed said the dealership will offer a diverse lineup of vehicles across different price points, allowing more residents to find models that fit their needs and budgets. "I think that overall, we are the right place, right time," he added, acknowledging there will be challenges but noting that the positives outweigh the negatives. "People have embraced us, and I think importantly we have embraced them likewise, and we have apprised these vehicles to sell, and to help in a place where public transportation is still in the works," Mohamed said, highlighting how additional vehicle options could serve residents while broader public transport solutions continue to develop.
For BVI motorists, the arrival of GAC could mean greater competition in the local market, potentially wider availability of new models, and more choices when it comes to price and features. Increased dealership offerings can also encourage improved after-sales service and parts availability locally, though residents should expect the usual timeline for establishing full service networks and parts inventories.
Organisers described the turnout and community interest as encouraging. With dealers promoting test drives and sales, residents will soon be able to see firsthand how GAC’s offerings compare to existing options in the territory. Tortola Auto Group said it is grateful for the support shown at the launch and hopes the new brand will contribute positively to motorists and the wider economy in the Virgin Islands.
