Government to Celebrate Dr. Robert Mathavious
The Government of the Virgin Islands has announced an official Celebration of Life for the late Dr. Robert A. Mathavious, OBE, with a public service set for Wednesday, 15 October at the Multi‑purpose Sports Complex beginning at 4:30 p.m., following a viewing earlier that afternoon. The Government of the Virgin Islands has announced an official Celebration of Life for the late Dr. Mathavious, OBE, recognising his decades of public service and his central role in building the Territory’s reputation as an international financial centre (Government of the Virgin Islands, Department of Information and Public Relations).
Mathavious’ body will lie in repose at the Multi‑purpose Sports Complex on Wednesday, 15 October from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Government officials and family members will view the body first; members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects after that initial viewing, according to the Government announcement and reporting by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).
The official Celebration of Life will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the same day at the Multi‑purpose Sports Complex. The programme will include tributes and musical selections under the theme "Revered at Home • Respected Abroad • Remembered Forever," the Government said. Local news outlet Guavaberry has also confirmed the date, venue and 4:30 p.m. start time for the public service, providing an additional local confirmation of details first released by the Government (Guavaberry).
The Government release and VINO reporting invite residents to attend the public events to reflect on Dr. Mathavious’ service; VINO described him as "one of [the Territory’s] foremost nation builders," emphasising that all are invited to pay their final respects. According to the Government notice and local reporting, viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the service at 10:30 a.m. As a mark of respect, flags will be flown at half‑mast across all government buildings on both 15 and 16 October (Government announcement). He served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission, held the post of Financial Secretary in the public service, and was an inaugural member of the Integrity Commission. In recognition of his contribution to education and workforce development, the Financial Services Institute at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College was renamed the Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services to inspire future generations of practitioners — a tribute to his lasting influence on training and professional development in the Territory (Government announcement).
