Government Unveils New Civil Mitigation Policy to
The Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer, has announced the Government of the Virgin Islands' Civil Mitigation Policy. This new policy is designed to improve the management of community infrastructure through a systematic and equitable approach.
In a significant move towards bolstering the infrastructure within the Virgin Islands, the Honourable Kye M. Rymer, Minister for Communications and Works, has introduced the Government of the Virgin Islands' Civil Mitigation Policy. Aimed at enhancing the management and oversight of infrastructure projects across communities, this policy outlines a new era of accountability, equity, and strategic resource allocation.
According to Minister Rymer, the Civil Mitigation Policy is a cornerstone in transforming how infrastructure projects are conceptualized, assessed, and implemented. 'This policy signifies a transformative approach to accountability, equity, and the strategic allocation of resources,' Rymer remarked.
By establishing clear criteria for civil mitigation projects, the policy aims to streamline the process of project selection and implementation, ensuring that the most critical needs of the communities are addressed first. A key feature of the new policy is the introduction of a Technical Assessment Committee.
This committee is tasked with evaluating and prioritizing project requests in an impartial manner, ensuring that decisions are made based on the criteria established by the policy rather than through subjective judgment. This move is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in the allocation of resources for civil mitigation efforts.
The projects eligible under this policy cover a wide array of initiatives critical to the daily lives of the residents of the Virgin Islands. These include road repairs and paving, sidewalk and kerb wall construction, retaining walls and road slabs, drainage improvements, cleaning and clearing of ghuts, installation, repairs, and refurbishment of government infrastructure, and road clearing in response to unforeseen weather events.
However, the implementation of approved projects is contingent upon the availability of funding. The policy outlines that financial resources for civil mitigation projects will be sourced from a dedicated district fund allocated to each of the nine electoral districts. This approach aims to ensure that all districts have access to the necessary funds to address their unique infrastructure needs.
The Civil Mitigation Policy represents a significant step forward in the Government of the Virgin Islands' commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents through better infrastructure management.
