Governor Daniel Pruce will remain in the British Virgin Islands until January 2028 after his tenure was officially extended by one year. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office approved the extension beyond his initial three-year term, which was previously scheduled to conclude in January 2027.
Governor Pruce shared the announcement in a video message published on the Governor's Office Facebook page, expressing delight over the decision to extend his time in the Territory. Describing the extension as great news, he stated that it remains an enormous privilege to work in the Virgin Islands and reaffirmed his dedication to providing the best possible public service throughout his extended term.
Along with the announcement, Governor Pruce outlined his administration's top priorities for the coming months, emphasizing security, governance reform, and ongoing constitutional negotiations. He noted that transforming the security and justice sectors remains at the top of his agenda, with work advancing in close collaboration with Premier Dr.
Natalio Wheatley, the Cabinet, and the wider locally elected government. Governance and institutional accountability also continue to be focal points. Governor Pruce announced that he will shortly present another progress report examining the implementation of reforms arising from the Commission of Inquiry.
Earlier in May, the Governor had noted that an assessment report on the implementation of these governance reforms was slated for submission to the UK government, and he confirmed that this formal review will be brought forward soon. Additionally, the Governor addressed the continuing constitutional negotiations between the Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom.
Describing his role as sitting between both delegations, Governor Pruce explained that his duty is to help facilitate discussions and support progress in steering the negotiations toward a successful conclusion. Governor Pruce was appointed by the UK government in June 2023 to succeed former Governor John Rankin.
He arrived in the Territory in January 2024 and was formally sworn into office on January 29, 2024. Discussions regarding a potential extension of his tenure had been acknowledged earlier in his term. The one-year extension carries significant political importance for the Virgin Islands, as it ensures administrative continuity from the United Kingdom and confirms that Governor Pruce will oversee the constitutional office through the next general elections cycle.
